The DBxtra .NET Server Database

The DBxtra .NET Server database holds all definitions about your DBxtra Projects.

The first time you login to DBxtra .NET you will be asked if either to create a new DBxtra Server Database or to connect to an existing one.

Click Create.

Create a new DBxtra Server DB

If you use DBxtra .NET in multi-user environment then you need to place the DBxtra Server DB on a shared resource where all DBxtra .NET users can connect to.

Configure the DBxtra .NET Server Database as a report web Service

This allows you to use the DBxtra Report Webservice.

Important! You need Windows Administrator privilege to install the Report Webservice.

You have two options installing the Report Web Service.

Option 1.) DBxtra Web Server

The DBxtra Web Server is a integrated Web Server.

The main advantage is that you don't need to have the Internet Information Server installed or configures  on your PC or Server.

Recommended for:

Demo use or local / LAN Report Web Service use.

Not recommended for:

Internet access.

Advantages:

No need to install or configure the IIS - Internet Information Server.

Quick installation; ideal for trial use.

Disadvantages:

Might not be secure over the Internet.

Might be a bit slower then the Internet Information Server.

The DBxtra Designer must be running on the PC or Server where the Report Web Service is installed.

If you use the DBxtra Report Web Service on a Web Server exposed to the Internet  we strongly recommend not to use this option. It might not be secure.

Hint! You can later change from the DBxtra Web server to the IIS - Internet Information Server.

Just configure and select the IIS installation option.

All required files will be re-directed and updated automatically.

Option 2.) Internet Information Server - IIS

Recommended for:

Production environment and exposure to the Internet.

Advantages:

Might be faster then the internal DBxtra Web Server.

Disadvantages:

The Internet Information Server must be installed and running on your PC or Server.

Although the DBxtra Report Web Service installer will take care of the IIS configuration it might require adjustments.

Select Report Web Service.

Select either "DBxtra web Server or Internet Information Server.

In case you install the Report Web Service on the internal DBxtra Web Server also choose the port number.

In most cases the default port 8080 will work fine.

Assign a Alias  name. By default DBxtra suggest DBxtra .NET.

Select a directory where to place the files. DBxtra will create a folder named DBxtra .NET (or the name you assigned) inside the selected path.

Click Create.

This will create a Virtual Directory and assign the Report Web Service path to it.

It will also automatically assign the ASPNET (or the NETWORKSERVICE  user if you install DBxtra on a Windows 2003 Server) window user privileges for the Virtual Directory.

Place the DBxtra .NET Server database on a disk path.

Important!

Placing the DBxtra .NET Database on a disk path will not allow you to use the Report Web Service.

But you can install and configure the Report Web Service  later from within the DBxtra Designer.

Select Disk path / File share. DBxtra will create a folder named DBxtra .NET  (or the name you assigned) inside the selected path

Assign a path where to create the DBxtra Server DB.

It is recommended that you place the DBxtra Server DB in a folder of its own.

DBxtra .NET will create the DBxtra Server Database in the folder you assigned.
